Springtails: Introduction

Preamble

The springtails (Collembola) are one of the most common groups of ‘insects’ to be found in leaf-litter and soil, but almost wholly overlooked by most entomologists. The publication of Steve Hopkins’ AidGAP key has helped to raise their profile, but this is still a very under-recorded group. This atlas is an attempt to encourage entomologists to identify and record springtails, adding to our knowledge of the ecology of Staffordshire.

The absence of records should not be seen as a confirmation of their absence, but rather an opportunity to find new County Records.
